The Intelligent Community Forum (ICF) has recognized Pickering as a Smart21 Communities of 2023, 2018 and 2017. The award program recognizes the world's leading municipalities that are successfully leveraging the power of technology to develop inclusive and prosperous communities.

The ICF designates Intelligent Communities as "pursuing tech-centric economic and community development in a new way. They break through the usual institutional barriers of local government to achieve more: a dynamic, prosperous and inclusive local economy that supports a strong and connected local society and a rich and meaningful local culture. These are the things that, together, make a great place to live, work, build a business or career and create a path for the next generation. In our digital century, the advance of technology is both a threat to these values and an asset that Intelligent Communities put to work for the benefit of their people, businesses and institutions."
