Pickering Nuclear Refurbishment

A once‑in‑a‑generation investment powering Ontario’s future

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is moving forward with a transformative plan to refurbish four CANDU reactors at the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station (PNGS). This major infrastructure project will extend the station’s life for decades, securing a long-term supply of clean, reliable, and affordable electricity for Ontario. The refurbishment represents one of the largest economic opportunities in the region’s history, strengthening local businesses, creating thousands of jobs, and reinforcing Pickering’s role as a cornerstone of Canada’s clean energy future.

A Major Economic Engine for Ontario

The Pickering refurbishment will generate significant economic benefits across the province: 30,500 jobs created during the refurbishment phase 6,700 jobs sustained throughout ongoing operations $26.8 billion total project investment Over 90% of spending retained within Canada $41.6 billion added to Canada’s GDP OPG will apply the same disciplined planning and partnership model that kept the Darlington refurbishment on time and on budget, ensuring strong oversight, predictable delivery, and maximum value for Ontarians.

Strengthening Indigenous Partnerships

OPG has committed $100 million in investments with Indigenous‑owned companies over the life of the project. This ensures First Nations hosting nuclear facilities share directly in the economic benefits and continue to play a meaningful role in Ontario’s clean energy transition.

Supporting Global Health Through Medical Isotopes

The refurbishment of Pickering “B” units will help secure a long-term supply of Cobalt‑60, a critical medical isotope used worldwide for: Cancer treatments Sterilization of medical equipment Food product safety This work supports Ontario’s goal to double provincial isotope production over the next four years, strengthening Canada’s leadership in the global medical isotope market.

Powering Ontario for Decades to Come

Once refurbished, Pickering will produce 2,200 megawatts (MW) of clean electricity, enough to power 2.2 million homes. Today, the station already supplies approximately 10% of Ontario’s electricity, making it an essential part of the province’s energy infrastructure. With provincial support, OPG is advancing plans to refurbish the Pickering “B” units, ensuring the station continues to deliver reliable, emissions‑free power well into the future.
